Safe, Thoughtful Options for Children Who Need Extra Support

Sedation Dentistry for Children

Some children need more than routine dental care to feel comfortable in the dentist’s chair. Anxiety, age, medical needs, or the complexity of treatment can all affect how a child experiences dental care.

At Pediatric Dentistry of Mansfield, sedation dentistry is never one-size-fits-all. Dr. Iten and Dr. Jones take time to understand your child, your concerns as a parent, and the care being provided — then guide you toward the safest and most appropriate option.

When Sedation Dentistry May Be Helpful

Sedation dentistry may be recommended when a child:

  • Experiences significant dental anxiety or fear
  • Is very young or unable to cooperate for treatment
  • Has special needs or medical considerations
  • Requires extensive or complex dental care
  • Has had difficult dental experiences in the past

Sedation is not about convenience or speed. It’s about helping children receive the care they need comfortably and safely, while fostering and protecting their long-term relationship with dental care.

Pediatric Sedation, Done the Right Way

Sedation dentistry for children requires advanced training, experience, and oversight.

Our practice is a state-certified sedation site, and Dr. Iten and Dr. Jones have completed 2 years in an advanced specialty residency in pediatric dentistry. Both doctors hold Pediatric Conscious Sedation licenses and are specially trained to provide safe, effective sedation tailored to children and teens.

When IV sedation is recommended, Dr. Iten and Dr. Jones work closely with state-certified, board-certified dental anesthesiologists to provide the highest level of monitoring and medical oversight.

Experience Matters

Over decades of care, our team has helped thousands of children receive dental treatment comfortably:

  • More than 28,000 conscious sedation cases
  • Over 2,700 IV sedation cases, completed without complication

Experience allows us to evaluate situations carefully, anticipate challenges, and make thoughtful recommendations for each child.

Sedation Options We Offer

Every child is different. That’s why we offer multiple sedation options, rather than a single approach.

Depending on your child’s age, medical history, anxiety level, and treatment needs, options may include:

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)

Oral conscious sedation

following state board-approved monitoring techniques and protocol

IV Sedation

monitored by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist

Some children do well with minimal support. Others benefit from deeper sedation. Our role is to help you understand the differences and decide what feels right for your child.

A Collaborative, Parent-Centered Process

Sedation decisions are always made together with parents, never assumed.

Before recommending sedation, we:

  • Review your child’s medical and dental history
  • Talk through previous experiences and current concerns
  • Explain benefits, risks, and alternatives
  • Coordinate with medical providers when appropriate

There is no pressure to choose a specific option. Our goal is to guide you toward a plan that feels informed, thoughtful, and safe.

Care Specifically Designed for Children

Children aren’t just smaller adults. They respond differently to medications, environments, and stress.

Choosing a pediatric dental team for sedation means choosing:

  • Child-specific training and protocols
  • Equipment and monitoring designed for children
  • A team experienced in pediatric behavior and development

It’s not about doing more — it’s about doing what’s appropriate for kids.
